Story of Y.O.U.th

Youth Organized and United to Help (Y.O.Uth) was established in 2007 in response to the death of 14 year old Davonte Lightfoot.  Davonte’s  death inspired an annual youth summit, a non-profit, and numerous community events for families and youth.

Most notable Y.O.U.th worked has been documented and published as a academic document with the help of Professor Alma Trinidad on Critical Indigenous Pedagogy of Place published in Sustainable Solutions: University–Community Partnerships (ed. Wortham-Galvin, Allen and Sherman)

Y.O.U.th’s name and acronym was inspired by revolutionary humanitarian the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan as he named an annual convention in 2008, It’s All About the Y.O.U.th.  After our founder attended the conference, she was inspired to adopt many aspects of the conference to the annual youth summit; including empowering workshops that focus on youth culture, issues and hip hop.

The initial inspiration was really my answer to the senseless, violent death of Davonte, and it was kind of my way of grieving. So I said let’s at least give the youth an opportunity to voice their opinions on the issues.
— Imani Muhammad, founder of Y.O.U.th
