Helpful Terms

Adverse Childhood Experiences- traumatic experiences that affect the integrity of the child or someone close to them. Those experiences include sexual or physical violence, drug abuse or misuse, and incarceration, among others.

Disproportionate Discipline- Disproportionate discipline occurs when one group of students (e.g. Black students) is subjected to disciplinary consequences more or less often than other groups.

Exclusionary Discipline- Disciplinary consequences that exclude students from the classroom and cause them to miss instructional time.

Equality- Providing every student with the same thing.

Equity- Providing every student with what they need to succeed.

School-to-prison pipeline- a system in which children are funneled out of public schools and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems. Many of these children have learning disabilities or histories of poverty, abuse, or neglect, and would benefit from additional educational and counseling services. Instead, they are isolated, punished, and pushed out.

Trauma- A deeply distressing or disturbing experience.

Trauma informed care- an approach that treats the whole person, taking into account past trauma and the resulting coping mechanisms, when attempting to understand behaviors while also recognizing that trauma is experienced differently based on the child’s culture.
