HISTORY

Youth Organized and United to Help (Y.O.Uth) was established in 2007 in response to the death of 14 year old Davonte Lightfoot.  Davonte’s  death inspired an annual youth summit, a non-profit, and numerous community events for families and youth.

Most notable Y.O.U.th worked has been documented and published as a academic document with the help of Professor Alma Trinidad on Critical Indigenous Pedagogy of Place published in Sustainable Solutions: University–Community Partnerships (ed. Wortham-Galvin, Allen and Sherman)

Y.O.U.th’s name and acronym was inspired by revolutionary humanitarian the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan as he named an annual convention in 2008, It’s All About the Y.O.U.th.  After our founder attended the conference, she was inspired to adopt many aspects of the conference to the annual youth summit; including empowering workshops that focus on youth culture, issues and hip hop.

2019

In 2018, in partnership with digital marketing company Goodie Nation, Y.O.U.th’s board and founder adopted a new mission.  To inspire, motivate, and empower youth, family, and educators to dismantle the school to prison pipeline by challenging existing systems and structures.  We will amplify our work through programs inside existing afterschool programs, parent engagement classes, events and a first class digital marketing campaign beginning 2019.

The Y.O.U.th summit was very interesting and informative. The things I learned in the workshops were very relevant and I enjoyed it. I also enjoyed the vast diversity that was at both the talent show and the summit. I am glad I got to be a part of this event and help our community partners.
